Advanced Placement (AP) at Southwest DeKalb High School
AP gives students the chance to tackle college-level work while they're still in high school—whether they're learning online or in the classroom. And through taking AP Exams, students can earn college credit and placement.


Advanced Placement (AP) Course Offerings

AP 2-D Art Design 

11th or 12th grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: Visual Art I, Drawing I, and Painting I courses should have been completed successfully. Any experience creating two-dimensional art and design work, in or out of the classroom, will be helpful. 

AP 3-D Art Design  

11th or 12th grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: Visual Art I, Drawing I, and Painting I courses should have been completed successfully. Any experience creating three-dimensional art and design work, in or out of the classroom, will be helpful. 

AP Drawing  

11th or 12th Grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: Visual Art I, Drawing I, and Painting I courses should have been completed successfully. Any experience creating art and design work through drawing, in or out of the classroom, will be helpful. 

AP Language and Composition  

11th Grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: None 

AP Literature and Composition  

12th Grade (Year-long)  

Recommended Prerequisites: Students should have successfully completed AP Language and Composition 

AP Human Geography  

9th -12th Grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: None                  

AP World History  

10th Grade (Year-long) 

 Recommended Prerequisites: None 

AP US History  

11th grade (Year-long)  

Recommended Prerequisites: Students should have successfully completed the AP World History course. 

AP Government and Politics  

10th -12th grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: Students should have successfully completed the American Government course. 

AP Macroeconomics  

12th grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: None 

 

AP Psychology  

10th -12th grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: None 

AP Statistics (Starting Fall 2023) 

11th or 12th Grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: All students should have successfully completed Algebra 2 and possess sufficient mathematical maturity and quantitative reasoning ability. 

 

AP Pre-Calculus (Starting Fall 2024) 

11th or 12th Grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: All students should develop proficiency in topics typically found in the Algebra 1-Geometry-Algebra 2 content sequence. 

 

AP Computer Science Principles  

10th -12th Grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: High school algebra course

AP Environmental Science  

11th or 12th Grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: Two years of high school laboratory science, including life science and physical science, along with at least one year of algebra 


AP Biology  

9th or 10th Grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: High school courses in biology and chemistry  

AP Chemistry  

11th or 12th Grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: High school courses in chemistry and Algebra II


AP Physics I  

11th or 12th Grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: Students should have completed a geometry course and concurrently take Algebra II or an equivalent course. 

 

AP French Language and Culture  

11th or 12th Grade (One Semester)  

Recommended Prerequisites: Students are typically in their fourth year of high-school-level study. For native or heritage speakers, there may be a different pathway of study leading to this course. 

 

AP Spanish Language and Culture  

11th or 12th Grade (One Semester)
